When is 1 Dhul-Hijjah 1443 AH (2022) in Saudi Arabia?
The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia has called people in the region to go out and sight the crescent moon of 1 Dhul-Hijjah 1443 AH on the evening of Wednesday, 29 June 2022. The date of the moon sighting is 30 Dhul-Qadah 1443 AH according to the Ummul Qura islamic calendar.
It is interesting that the Supreme Court invited people to sight the crescent moon (hilal) on the 30th day of the month when the usual practice is to go out on the 29th day. However, it should be noted that on the 29th day, which is Tuesday, the moon is still below the horizon in Saudi Arabia when the sun sets. Therefore, it is impossible to sight the crescent moon.
But, sighting the moon on the 30th day of the hijri month could potentially led to a month that is 31-days long if nobody can sight the moon. The moon will already be above the horizon at the time of sunset in Saudi Arabia on the evening of Wednesday. However, it will need optical aids to see the moon there. Therefore, it is expected that the Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia will accept any “claimed” sighting of the crescent moon of Dhul-Hijjah tomorrow and announced that 1 Dhul-Hijjah 1443 AH will correspond to Thursday, 30 June 2022 just as calculated by the Ummul Qura calendar.
