Today, Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) has released an announcement regarding the start of fasting month, Ramadan in the year 1444 AH of the islamic calendar. In the circulated flyer, 1 Ramadan 1444 AH is declared to start on Thursday, 23 March 2023 for Australia. AFIC stated the following about the decision:
Based on current moon data, the Founding Members of the AFIC National Sharia Board (ANSB) including the Most Eminent Sh Abdul Quddoos Al Azhari, the Grand Mufti of Australia and AFIC President Rateb Jneid, have resolved to declare the start of Ramadan to be Thursday 23 March 2023, in shaa Allah.
First Taraweeh for 2023 will be after Isha on Wednesday, 22 March 2023.

In a separate announcement, the Australian National Imam Councils (ANIC), also released similar statement regarding the start of Ramadan 1444 AH in Australia. In their annoucement, ANIC stated that the moon for 1 Ramadan 1444 H will be above the horizon of Australia for some times at the evening of Wednesday, 22 March 2023. Given no hindrance for sighting, the moon could be visible. Therefore the first day of 1 Ramadan 1444 AH corresponds to Thursday, 23 March 2023.
